Social impact of SMS Balcony project
Introduction: SMS balcony from Experion Technologies helps achieve advance booking for upto 4 seats through one SMS and it eliminates the need for a person to travel to the theatre to do an over the counter booking. Studying the booking behaviour of the general public, it is seen that 60% do over the counter booking – or end up going two times to the theatre for a movie..!
Cost Savings: Considering other booking methods, the SMS Balcony product is expected to bring about a minimum of 5 to 10 times cost savings to the customer for a booking, just considering a litre of fuel for a trip, even without considering the cost of time saved. There are a set of qualitative factors from a customer experience point of view and quantitative factors as well that can be considered to calculate the cost savings more precisely.
The qualitative factors that enhance customer's experience are:-
Time savings for end users & Enhanced Comfort and convenience for end users
Environment friendliness
Increased capacity utilisation of movie halls. (With an easy mechanism for ticket reservation, the capacity utilisation is expected to be more thereby bringing better earnings to the theatres)
Fuel savings
Assume that on an average 25 bookings/show are done via SMS for 3 shows in about 100 movie halls across Kerala, for 300 days in a year. An average of 25 trips would thus be saved. Assume an average distance of 10 KM to cinema Halls and an average mileage of 20 KM/ litre of petrol/ diesel combined considering two wheelers, 3 wheelers and four wheelers together. The following calculation shows the total fuel consumption and savings brought about by the usage of this product. The table below shows the detailed calculations.
Total trips made to theatres for booking
25 X 3 X 100 X 300
22,50,000 trips
Total distance in KM
2250000 X 10
2,25,00,000 KMs
Volume of fuel (assuming 20 KM/litre)
22500000/20
11.25 Lakh lit, 10 Lakh lit (Approx)
Total Cost of fuel (assuming average Rs. 30/ L
Rs. 3,00,00,000.00
Considering the above, it can be seen that the potential national savings could be over 150 Crores.
